It’s usually a mixture of crippling fear, anxiety and maybe even desperate frustration... I get it! When you’re playing in ‘regular’ time signatures (usually 4/4 or 3/4) things are comfortable, it feels good, and you don’t have to think about anything other than making great music. But playing in five? Seven!?! Or 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻?!?! What about 𝗳𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗻?!?!?! If you’re not used to it, these can be legitimately scary, and for most bassists, playing in odd times is about as comfortable as walking around with sharp rocks in your socks. Today though, I want to change that for you. I want to help you see that playing in an odd time doesn’t have to be stressful or difficult and that’s why I want to get you started with just 3 super simple odd time signature bass lines. If you can nail these (and I’m 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 you can), you’ll see how much fun it can be and how cool it can sound to play in these odd times. Plus, you’ll learn how to ‘break down’ odd time signatures into super manageable ‘chunks’ so playing in 5, 7, 11, 13 or anything else can be just as comfortable as playing in 4. I’m curious as well - check out the 2nd bass line (at the 4:33 mark) and see if you can pick out the time signature on that one just by listening to it. If you're feeling 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 brave, leave a comment on the lesson with your answer before I reveal it in the video. Also, if you want a bit of a challenge, take a guess at what time signature the 2nd and 3rd bass lines are in and leave a comment before I reveal the answers in the video. Good luck with these odd time bass lines - I’m sure you’ll see that they’re not so difficult when you know how to break them down. Cheers, Luke P.S.
